The Setting…
The
middle grades configuration in East Allen County Schools (EACS)
supports a variety of approaches. Within the district, we are
structured to offer a traditional junior high setting and a middle
school setting. The traditional setting is available at Heritage
Jr./Sr. High School, Leo Jr./Sr. High School, and Woodlan Jr./Sr. High
School comprising grades 7-8 along with grades 9-12. New Haven Middle
School serves grades 6-8 and Paul Harding Junior High serves grades 7-8. Whatever
the structure, EACS will refer to the "middle grades" as the grade
levels encompassed by both the middle school and junior high school
settings.
The Task…
Throughout
the middle grades, our focus is upon the students and the strengthening
of the skills necessary to meet the requirements of an ever-changing
world. Recognizing that the demands on students today are vastly
different from the demands on students in the past, our task is to
provide a curriculum that will prepare the students to succeed. Staff
focus on each student's intellectual, social, physical, and emotional
needs in order to encourage all students to become life-long learners.
The Curriculum…
Students
in the middle grades are involved in a solid core of academic
experiences enhanced by extra-curricular programs and a variety of
social events. These experiences provide pathways to opportunity for
academic achievement, successful leadership, positive social
interaction, and a healthy attitude toward life-long learning.
The
core academic experiences during the middle grades include language
arts, mathematics, sciences, and social studies. This core is supported
by programs in fine arts including band, choir, general music, and art;
practical arts including technology education and consumer and family
sciences; introductory experiences in foreign language through study of
culture and language; physical education and health & safety; and a
variety of computer laboratory experiences. Special education services
are provided to students who are identified as disabled under Indiana
law.
Students in the middle grades have
opportunities to participate in extracurricular programs for the
academically inclined. Students may choose to become involved in such
events as the Hoosier Spell Bowl, the Allen County Spelling Bee,
Knowledge Master Open competition, Band and Choir competitions, and of
course the traditional interscholastic athletic programs for both boys
and girls. After-school events such as dances and skating parties
provide opportunities for students to develop social skills in settings
other than the classroom.
